This lever activated falling block single shot target rifle was designed by Lewis Hepburn and was manufactured from 1883 to 1907 with approximately 8,000 to 10,000 in total production. The top barrel flat is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." behind the rear sight and "40. 2 1/2" stamped over "1 7/8" on the underside ahead of the forearm. Globe front sight and adjustable rear sight. The lower left side of the receiver is marked "HEPBURNS PAT./OCT 7TH 1879", and the matching serial number is marked on the lower tang and lower barrel flat under the forearm. Blue barrel, niter blue breechblock, hammer and trigger, casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth forearm with a iron forend insert, and multi-point checkered round knob pistol grip stock with a carbine style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period rechambered (see above). The barrel has a smooth brown patina with a small amount of very light spotting. The receiver shows strong traces of original bright case colors around the lever with the balance having silvered out. The buttplate has a smooth mottled brown patina. The wood is good with scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The action is excellent.
