Description:

The Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls manufactured the Maynard percussion rifles and carbines widely used during the Civil War. After the Civil War the company turned its attention to the civilian market and produced a large variety of single shot Maynard rifles chambered for various metallic cartridges. This example was rebuilt using a Civil War era First Model action as it has the door for the primer mechanism on the right side and is fitted with the First Model style peep sight. It also has taps for a sling swivel ring on the lower tang as was standard on First Model carbines. A firing pin has been fitted in place of the percussion nipple. The right side of the frame is marked with the Maynard Arms Company address (obscured). It is fitted with a Second Model style flat buttstock with slightly curved buttplate. The 26 inch part octagon barrel has a modified brass blade front sight and screw adjustable notch rear sight. The 20 inch barrel has globe front sight and no provision for a rear sight. The set comes in a hardwood case with fitted interior with sections for each of the barrels, the stock/action, and the included powder measure, screw driver, and Massachusetts Arms Co. dual cavity .36 caliber bullet mold.

Rating Definition:

Fair as refinished and altered in period. There are traces of finish with primarily a mottled brown patina on the barrels. The action retains faded blue finish and a brown patina. There are some scratches and marks throughout along with patches of light oxidation/pitting. The stock is very fine with smooth oiled surfaces and only some minor pressure marks. The action is fine. The case is fine with some mild storage wear on the exterior and various small tears and stains on the interior along with a few cracked divider pieces. The right latch on the lid will not close. The accessories are fine overall. This is a very interesting set overall built on a Civil War era action designed by Edward Maynard who also invented the Maynard priming system used on some pre-Civil War martial rifles.
