Description:

This rifle has a hooded post front sight and an adjustable peep sight mounted into the upper tang. It has a false muzzle with a round disc to block the sights so that the rifle is not accidentally fired when it is on and a ramrod with round knob and a cap that fits against the false muzzle to ensure even and consistent pressure is applied while loading for accuracy. The barrel is marked "H. SPERL/SUCQA DEPORT PA" and "RECUT BY./J.N. GARDNER/SCRANTON". H. Sperl was listed as a maker of percussion hunting rifles in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, circa 1855 in AMERICAN FIREARMS MAKERS by Arthur Merwin Carey. John N. Gardner appears in WEBB'S SCRANTON CITY DIRECTORY as a gunsmith in 1884. It has double set triggers in a trigger guard with pistol grip extension. The rifle is not fitted with a forearm but has a straight wrist stock with cheekpiece and a schuetzen style buttplate. The barrel and false muzzle are browned while the other components are nickel plated. The rifle weighs over 18 pounds.

Rating Definition:

Fine as re-bored and likely refinished in period. The barrel has a mixture of thinned brown finish and brown patina with some light edge wear, light spotting, and a few marks. 97% of the nickel plating remains on the other components with some tiny spots of flaking and a dark residue on the upper tang. The wood is fine with some minor scrapes and a few small white marks. The action is excellent.
