Description:

This beautiful powder horn is over 16 inches long and has a large coin or sterling silver shield on the nicely figured plug that is jeweler engraved with "MADE BY/ Walter E. Wilcox/Great Salt Lake City/FEBY 1864" in contrasting fonts surrounded accented by light designs. The horn has primarily an attractive light color on the horn proper and a contrasting amber tone on the stepped spout. A loop with a leather tassel is fixed in the center of the plaque. Included with the horn is research information concerning Wilcox and the Mormons. Among the documents is a copy of a lesson from May 1980 from the Daughters of Utah Pioneers titled "Pioneer Gunsmiths and Guns" along with "The Life and Work of a Pioneer". The research indicates that Walter E. Wilcox was close to both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and was selected as number three in the Quorum of Seventies in 1858. Wilcox was born in Massachusetts in 1821, moved to Illinois before heading to the West due to growing hostility towards the Mormons at Nauvoo and was one of the pioneering settlers of "The Great Salt Lake City." He was a cabinet maker and general millwright, perfected a large log boring machine, and is credited with making the first water piper for distribution of culinary water in Utah. He also oversaw and worked on many difficult projects including supplying enormous roof timbers for the Mormon Tabernacle. The horn is in very good condition overall with only minor handling and storage type wear and a minor chip near the plug. The plaque has some patina and crisp markings.
