Description:

This flask measures 9 inches in length and has a brown lacquer finish. It has a plunger top, double sides relief "Trophy of Arms" decorated with "COLTS PATENT" banner at the bottom. The rings on the mortar are at an angle. It has the triangular hanging rings on each side near the bottom as were personally requested by Walker. The lid to the ball compartment is marked "COLTS/PATENT" in an oval. The top is correctly secured to the body with three steel screws. See pages 113-115 in Colt Percussion Accoutrements, 1834-1873 by Robin J. Rapley to compare this flask to the known Walker flask pictured and discussed. This flask has the correct oval markings as noted above which are only seen on Walker flasks and a very few of the earliest Dixon made Dragoon flasks, has the correct crossed revolvers (left gun under the right gun), and the angled/offset mortar rings as discussed above. Also see page 162 and 163 of the same work to compare it to the Dragoon pattern which has the distinctively different inline mortar rings and parallel Colt Patent markings. Also note that the loading levers on the revolvers are different on the earlier Walker flasks and this one.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The brass has an aged patina. There are a few minor dents and much of the seam is separating. The "Trophy of Arms" is fairly crisp, and the compartment lid marking is crisp and clear. This is a solid example of an original and extremely scarce Walker powder flask. These original Walker flasks are so rare that many have found them hard to identify!
