Description:

U.S. Model 1819 Hall Breechloading Flintlock Rifle manufactured by the U.S. Harpers Ferry Armory in 1838. The Model 1819 Hall Rifle is an extremely important U.S. martial arm. The Hall rifle was the first breechloading firearm adopted as a regulation weapon by a major power and the first mass produced firearm with completely interchangeable parts. Approximately 19,680 Model 1819 Hall rifles were manufactured at Harpers Ferry between 1823 and 1840. Hall rifles were used in the Mexican War and small numbers remained in service at the outbreak of the Civil War. This Third Model Hall Rifle has a brown lacquer finish on the barrel and iron furniture, casehardened breechblock and lock, bright iron, button head and ramrod. The rifle has a trigger guard with prominent finger spur, pin-fastened barrel bands and rectangular front sight base that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet. In addition to the unique breechloading flintlock action with pivoting breechblock, the barrel is bored smooth for approximately 1 1/2 inches from the muzzle to facilitate loading the rifle from the muzzle. The breechblock is stamped "J.H. HALL/H. FERRY/U.S./1838" in four lines. The stock and barrel are correctly not stamped with final inspection marks or proofs.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The almost as issued rifle is all original and shows only light-moderate storage and handling wear. The barrel, barrel bands, receiver, trigger guard and buttplate retain at least 80% of the original brown lacquer finish. Nearly all of the muted case colors are present on the breechblock and lock. The breechblock and pan have no flash pitting. The breechblock markings are extremely sharp. The stock has an old coating of preservative varnish but remains in very good - excellent overall condition with sharp edges and un-handled raised, grain. This is a very good example of a historically significant Model 1819 Hall rifle. A Hall rifle is a key piece in any comprehensive collection of primary U.S. Martial firearms.
