Description:

Active from the 1750's through to 1809, Lewis Prahl was a Pennsylvania sword and silversmith. During and after the Revolution, he produced complete swords as well as blades for other firms to fit and mount. Of the few surviving examples of Prahl's work, the majority are unsigned. Overall length is 35 1/4 inches, with a 29 3/8 inch curved double fuller blade stamped "PRAHL" just above the left ricasso. The guard and pommel are both silver construction, with a ribbed horn grip and a sculpted knight's helm on the pommel. The name "C. Wiltbenner" is visible inside the guard. Notes provided by the consignor suggest a post-1790 production, and compare the sword to an unsigned example in the Lattimer Family Collection of American silver-hilted swords.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The patina of the hilt is very even-toned. Rust and pitting are present on the blade, concentrated in the upper half and a crack is visible on the right side of the grip.
