Description:

Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1889. The barrel has the Model 1884 Buffington rear sight marked "R" on the top of the leaf. The rifle has the late production features which include: two-piece trigger guard, grooved trigger, three click tumbler, impressed checkering on the hammer spur and low arch breech block. The rifle has a military blue finish with vivid water quenched case colors on the breechblock and barrel tang. The lock plate is roll stamped with "Springfield Eagle/Shield" motif ahead of the hammer followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two-lines. The top of the breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884" in three-lines. The top of the barrel is stamped with a block "A" between the rear sight and the receiver. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks. The serial number "443711" is stamped across the rear of the receiver. "U.S." is boldly stamped on the heel of the buttplate ahead of the screw. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "SWP" above the date "1889" within a rectangle. An encircled script "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard finial. The Model 1884 Trapdoor Springfield was used in the final engagements of the Indian Wars and carried in the Spanish American War by U.S. volunteer regiments. It is a key piece in any collection of U.S. martial arms.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The rifle appears to be unissued, all original and retains at least 98% of the blue and color casehardened finish. There is some minor finish wear on the buttplate heel and on the bottom of the trigger guard. The breechblock has vivid case colors. All of the markings on the barrel, breechblock receiver and lock plate are extremely sharp. The black walnut stock retains almost all of the original oil finish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor storage marks. The Ordnance final inspection mark on the left wrist is nearly perfect. This is an excellent example of a Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that would be an outstanding addition to any collection of U.S. martial arms.
