Description:

During the first half of the 17th century the gunmakers of Brescia, Italy produced the finest and most beautiful weapons in Europe. Many of their works were and are certainly prized as much as art as they are as firearms. This fine pair of flintlock horse pistols were crafted by famed Brescian gunmaker Lazaro Lazarino his work was famous for its artistic appeal and lightness. The barrels are marked "LA : LAZARINO" towards the rear on a rib ahead of relief designs including a large image of a man on horseback. The lock plates are marked "A. ROSSINO" below the pan. Rossino's markings have been seen on a few other locks from what is now Italy during the 17th century suggesting he was a lock maker whereas Lazarino is a known gunmaker. The locks, side plates, ramrod entry pipe finials, trigger guards, wrist inlays, and buttcaps all have coordinating relief designs, and the full length stocks have matching carving patterns. The pistols were produced without sights and have pig tail triggers and serrated frizzens. Each included a wooden ramrod with metal tip.

Rating Definition:

Very good especially given the apparent production in the late Renaissance. The metal surfaces are mostly bright with some gray patina forming and slight marks and scratches. The stock is fine with some small pressure marks, light scratches, and multiple minor cracks. The action is excellent, and the designs and markings throughout are crisp. Few of these early pieces survive let alone pairs in exceptional condition.

Rating Definition:

Very good especially given its age. The metal surfaces remain primarily bright with some light spotting, light scratches, and minor marks. The stock is fair with several cracks and repairs, some light pressure marks, and a few scrapes. The carving on the stock and engraving designs are crisp throughout as are the markings. The action is excellent.
