A) Unknown Back Action Percussion Pistol

Model: Percussion
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 69
Barrel: 6 inch octagon
Finish: brown/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 4775
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 91
Class: Antique
Description:

The tops of the barrels of these smoothbore pistols are marked "CANON 'A RUBANS" in gold with silver borders signifying the barrels were manufactured using the ribbon steel method. The wrapped "ribbons" of steel left a distinctive striped appearance and texture on the barrels. Both are marked "85" on the upper tangs (partially obscured on A). The pistols have brass post and notch sights. The back action locks and hammers have bright scalloped borders. The walnut stocks have fluted grips, unmarked initial ovals, and steel grip caps. The majority of the metal surfaces aside from the browned barrels are casehardened. The pair comes in a fitted hardwood case with unmarked initial plate on the lid and lined interior with a bullet mold, small powder flask with Greco-Roman style male nude designs over "B.A. PARIS.", and a screw driver. Each pistol has an iron ramrod with flared tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has a light brown patina with nearly all of the gold filled markings remaining and attractive striped patterns. The casehardened components retain 60% of the case colors underneath a protective lacquer. The borders on the lock and hammer are mostly bright. The silver wedge escutcheon on the right has verdigris. The stock is very food with some small ding and slight scratches. The action is excellent.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Matching condition to gun A but with no verdigris around the wedge which has a slightly damaged head and some slight patches of pitting. The case is fine with some chips on the edges and staining on the interior. The accessories are fine.
