Description:

A really wonderful Indian, genuine hall-marked, flintlock trade musket shortened to carbine length with silver decorations. All the Indian alterations and decorations are original, period-of-use, and untouched. This is a classic example of Indian "Make Do". The ignition is original flint. The wrist displays a 2 1/2-inch engraved trade silver beaver with the stamped raised initials "T.M." The silver inlay is bordered with 32 inlaid red beads. The butt is decorated with 16 brass tacks. This gun was originally a U.S. Flintlock Musket with oval cheek piece recess. An Indian gunsmith replaced the lock with a French Charleville lock with faceted iron pan in original flint (the touch-hole aligns perfectly), but retained the U.S. hammer. The trigger guard is a French replacement. The buttstock has been shortened and the brass buttplate is also a replacement from another arm. The musket shows rich Indian workmanship throughout and is beautiful as such!

Rating Definition:

Fair. The musket has an attractive dark patina on the stock, lock, barrel and iron furniture. The French "Charleville" markings on the lock plate are legible but there are no other visible maker's marks or military markings. The engraving and hall-mark on the silver beaver are clear. This is a very attractive example of a 19th Century Native American used and modified canoe gun length.
