This is an example of a possibly New York engraved Colt Third Model derringer (manufactured 1875-1912) fitted with smooth mother of pearl grips. Similar examples can be seen on pages 219 and 220 of THE BOOK OF COLT ENGRAVING by R.L. Wilson. It has lush floral scroll work patterns with punch dot backgrounds on more than half of the barrel and frame. The top of the barrel has the standard italic "COLT" marking and the serial number is marked on the grip strap under the grip panel. The bottom of the barrel has two London style proof marks. It has a half moon front sight, smooth spur trigger, and knurled hammer.

Very fine as period engraved. 98% plus of the replated silver plating on the barrel remains with some dark patina forming on the bottom. The hammer and trigger have a dark coloration with some case colors showing. The brass frame remains mostly bright with some handling marks and faint pitting. The grips are very fine with some small chips at the edges. Mechanically excellent with crisp engraving patterns and markings. This is a very attractive piece overall.
