Description:

Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter manufactured in 1940. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that lists the caliber as "44/40", the barrel length as 4 3/4 inches and the finish as "Blue". The type of stocks are not listed. The letter states that this revolver was shipped to Walter C. Holcome in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, on April 13,1940. This is one of the last pre-war Colt .40-40 Single Action Army revolvers to retain the "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40" markings on the left side of the barrel. The Frontier Six Shooter markings were discontinued by Colt around serial number "356,000" just after this revolver was manufactured. The revolver has the Colt pre-war commercial blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame and loading gate are color casehardened. The trigger and top of the hammer are blued and the sides of the hammer are polished bright. The two-piece black checkered, hard rubber grips have the Rampant Colt trademark embossed in an oval at the top. In addition to the "Frontier Six-Shooter" marking on the left side of the barrel, the top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Hartford address. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'Two-Line/Three-Date' patent markings followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. The left front of the trigger guard bow is stamped with the assembler's mark "Y" above the Colt "Triangle/VP" proof mark. The assembly number "338" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The full serial number "356135" is stamped on the bottom of the frame and the right side of the back strap and trigger guard underneath the grip. The partial serial number "135" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. "356135" is lightly scratched on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a royal blue cardboard carton. The blue and white label on the end of the carton reads" "4 3/4 Colt's Army S.A. Revolver .44/Rubber Blue". Colt advertising labels are glued to the inside of the lid and the bottom of the carton. The carton contains a Colt "SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS" pamphlet. The revolver serial number "356135" is written in pencil on one end of the carton bottom.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver is all original and retains 99% plus of the blue and color casehardened finish. The cylinder shows only traces of turn lines between the stops. The screws are perfect and the bore is mirror bright. The grips are also like new. The carton is in good condition with flaking around the corners of the body and edges of the lid. There are several small dents and cracks in the lid. The carton is solid. The edges of the end label have some flaking but it remains nearly all intact. This is a nearly new example of one of the very last Single Action Army revolvers marked with the "COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" legend complete with Colt factory letter and the original Colt carton.
