Description:

This late 19th century "Northwest" trade gun was produced by the Barnett Company of England and features the classic serpentine/dragon side plate that Native people looked for when trading for arms, is lightweight, designed for use with shot or ball, has a blade front sight, and features mostly round barrel with "wedding band" and an octagonal breech section. The barrel is in the common 30 to 45 inch barrel length range and has intertwined "CP", "24", "crown/v", "flag", and "crown/JEB" proof marks on the upper left flat at the breech. The lock plate is double stamped with "BARNETT/LONDON/1871" behind the hammer with what appears to be the Hudson Bay Company's tombstone "fox/EB" stamp below the removable flash pan. It is fitted on a pinned full length stock with attractive stripe patterns on the forend and grain on the butt and a flat five screw buttplate made from brass. It also features the correct oversized trigger guard which allows the trigger to be pulled using two fingers as was the preference of many Native American hunters and warriors. This example appears to have been reconverted to flintlock using period parts. It is not uncommon for trade guns to have been modified multiple times in their period of use given that they received hard use and exposure. It includes a hickory ramrod with brass tip.

Rating Definition:

Very good as restocked, refinished and polished. 80% of the artificial brown finish remains with some thin areas, and the lock has a gray patina. There are areas of light pitting and some minor marks and scratches. The brass components have an attractive aged patina. The replacement stock is very good with only a few minor dings and some slight scratches. The action is excellent, and most of the markings are clear.
