Description:

The Model 320 revolving rifle is one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms produced with a total production of 977. This is a factory prototype of the Smith & Wesson Model 320 revolving rifle, which was manufactured using the frame, cylinder and basic action of the New Model No. 3 revolver with some minor differences in the hammer and trigger and the barrel being made of two pieces. A small number "30" is stamped on top of the barrel rib behind the rear sight and a small letter "Y" is stamped on the butt. There are no other markings. A slot is cut into the butt and a hole drilled in the back strap to accommodate the shoulder stock. The 16 inch barrel features a solid rib with a globe front sight featuring cross hairs and a two leaf rear sight. Casehardened hammer and trigger guard with the remaining metal surfaces left in the white. The barrel is fitted with a checkered hard rubber red mottled forearm with the S&W monogram on the underside. The grips are checkered walnut and the back of the right panel is stamped with the number "1151". The stock features nickel plate mounting hardware and a checkered hard rubber buttplate featuring the S&W monogram. The lower tang of the Australian contract stock is stamped with military style broad arrow and the number "12276." The grips, stock and forearm appear to be later additions. A unique variation of one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms ever produced.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolving rifle has a bright, unfinished, in-the-white appearance starting to age. The hammer and trigger guard retain some vivid original case colors. The forearm is excellent with overall crisp checkering. The grips are very good with a crack at the top of the left panel and a number of pressure dents on the bottoms. There are a few blemishes in the crudely cut checkering. Mechanically fine. The stock is fine with the attaching hardware retaining 90% original nickel finish with the wood showing a series of long scratches on the underside, a few cracks along the grain and a number of minor handling marks.
