Description:

The U.S. Army utilized Schofield revolvers alongside the Colt Single Action Army in the late 19th century. The Schofield revolvers were based on Smith & Wesson's No. 3 with improvements in the latch and a new cartridge the .45 S&W, also known as the .45 S&W Schofield. The .45 S&W worked in the Single Action Army revolvers whereas the .45 Colt would not work in the Schofield leading the Army to adopt the a modified version of the .45 S&W as the standard "ball" ammunition for a short period before the Schofields were withdrawn from service. The Schofield revolvers were designed for the cavalry and were said to be twice as fast as the Colt to reload. Manufactured circa 1876-1877, this Second Model Schofield revolver has the standard markings including "US" on the butt, matching visible serial numbers, and single letter inspection marks. It is equipped with the standard pinned blade front and integral notch rear sights. It has the less common nickel plated finish with a blued latch and smooth mother of pearl grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 40% plus of the period nickel plating remains with a brown patina on the balance. The latch retains nearly half of the original finish and traces of the original case colors remain visible on the hammer. There are some light scratches and marks throughout and a brighter cylinder drag line. The grips are very good with some chips at the corners and an aged but still iridescent appearance. The action is fine and the markings remain crisp.
