The Merrimack Arm & Manufacturing Company manufactured approximately 6,500 of the Southerner pistols from 1866 to 1873. This example is one of only a few that were engraved and features rare geometric and scroll engraving covering nearly all of the sides and upper areas of the frame with punch dot backgrounds and some additional geometric designs on the lower areas and back strap. It has a round blade front sight and is fitted with a pair of smooth rosewood grips. The top of the barrel is marked "SOUTHERNER" and "MERRIMACK ARMS & M'F'G Co./NEWBURYPORT, MASS./PATENTED APRIL 9, 1867" is on the left. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the butt and grip panels. The barrel has "1." instead of a serial number and the extractor is numbered to another gun.

Fine as fitted with replacement parts. The barrel has mostly a brown patina on the balance and a couple small nicks. The frame mostly displays an aged patina with 20% of the factory silver plating remaining mostly on the lower areas and the back strap. The grips are very good with some slight marks and lower edge wear. The engraving patterns and markings are crisp and the action is fine.
