Description:

Though unsigned, this rifle was reportedly built by gunsmith Benjamin F. Shane of Hampshire County, Virginia in the mid-1820 to mid-1830s given it closely resembles the Shane rifle pictured on page 134 of Whisker's GUNSMITHS OF VIRGINIA with an identical patch box on the right side with an acorn finial. The rifle also has matching German silver inlays on the stock between the flats and ramrod entry pipe and similar inlay on the cheekpiece. This example has a left side patch box near the butt that is round with an acorn finial as opposed to the more plain patch box directly below the cheekpiece in the pictured example. The lock and hammer have some light engraving and a partially obscured lock maker's mark with only "GOLCH" visible. Golcher/Goulcher manufactured the locks utilized by many 19th century American gunmakers. The rifle is fitted on a full length maple stock with brass furniture. It is equipped with fixed blade and notch sights and double set triggers.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and lock have a gray patina with traces of brown residue, areas of light to mild pitting, and general minor marks and scratches. The brass components have a brown patina with some brighter brass, and the German silver inlay have an aged patina. The refinished stock is good with some faint scrapes and handling/storage type marks. The action is needs work. As noted above, the lock markings are mostly obscured.
