A) Unmarked Engraved Half-Stock Percussion Fowling Piece with Kentucky Style Patch Box

Manufacturer: American
Model: Half Stock
Type: Musket
Gauge: 12
Barrel: 40 3/4 inch round
Finish: brown/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1888
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 48
Class: Antique
Description:

This fowler has no visible maker's marks but has engraving patterns at the breech end of the barrel, on the lock, and on the ornate patch box and buttplate. The barrel has a blade front sight. It is fitted on a walnut half stock with checkering on the grip, slightly raised cheek rest on the left, and German silver inlays. The inlay on the cheek rest has light floral engraving. It comes with a replacement wooden ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel has a light brown patina on the forward section and gets progressively darker towards the breech. The lock also has a dark brown patina. The brass furniture and German silver inlays have an aged patina. The stock is fair as sanded and has several cracks, smoothed checkering, and some light scrapes. The action is functional, but the barrel is a little loose.

B) Rashmore & Son Half-Stock Percussion Rifle

Manufacturer: American
Model: Half Stock
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 50
Barrel: 28 1/2 inch octagon
Finish: brown/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1888
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 48
Class: Antique
Description:

The lightly engraved lock plate of the plains rifle is marked "RASHMORE/& SON" below the bolster and a "W" inlay. Similar Rashmore guns have been seen in the past with barrel markings from the East, but these rifles are similar to the types commonly manufactured in the Midwest during the 19th century. This example also has a round blade front sight behind a dovetail with a brass insert and has a notch rear sight. It is fitted on a walnut half-stock with cheek rest, brass furniture including the patch box, and a German silver initial/thumb plate. The consignor notes indicate this plains rifle was made in Glasgow, Missouri, by John Wachter. The small size and big bore made it easier to use on horseback and when hunting in brush. Period sources list Wachter as a gunsmith and retailer born and trained in Switzerland in 1833. He moved to Glasgow and opened a shop sometime before 1866. He died there in 1897.

Rating Definition:

Poor. The barrel retains a mixture of fading brown finish and brown patina while the lock has a brown patina. The brass and German silver have an aged patina. There is oxidation throughout and some pitting. The barrel tang and buttplate are cracked. Several screws are poor fitting replacements. The stock is fair as sanded and refinished with a loose wedge, material absent around the lock, extensive repairs on the forend, and a crack on the left stock flat. The action needs work.
