Description:

Produced by an unknown cutler and dated 1783, this weapon appears to have been made by engineering a very large folding knife, and mounting it to a flintlock pistol at the frame, and then accenting the combination with a set of wire accented wooden grip panels which double as a protector for the lock hardware. Overall length when opened is 27 1/8 inches, with the single edged clip-point blade measuring 12 5/8 inches long with an armorers mark of a goblet bearing a "+" on the left side. Locking is performed by not one but two springs on the spine, one with a square catch near the base of the blade, providing impressive stability and rigidity when open. No makers marks are visible on the exposed portions of the pistol. The wood shows a number of brass wire inlays, a few copper wire inlays, and "bGWF" in copper on the right side.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has been patched with bronze at the halfway point, and most of the metal surfaces show a mixed brown and gray patina with areas of shallow pitting. A few light nicks are present on the tip and edge of the blade. Wood is fair as repaired, with a filled/mended break in the right panel, smaller repairs on the left, and scattered dings and wire loss. Mechanically good. Writer cannot even recall seeing an example quite like this.
