Description:

Measuring 23 inches in height, this axe is fitted with a 5 1/2 inch long head, with a curved 3 1/2 inch edge and a 1 1/8 inch square hammer at the rear. Floral pattern gold koftgari overlay covers much of the head surface with the fill on the sides of the hammer being especially strong and gold-bordered silver panels are present on the blade. Additional gold work, mostly geometric, is present on the iron haft and grip which are mounted on a red cloth covered hardwood shaft and secured with a brass-riveted iron strip. Notes from the consignor attribute the axe to the Ottomans in the 18th or 19th century.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal components show a deep brown patina overall with over 85% of the original metal overlay. The head is a bit loose on the shaft with the cloth faded and worn through in a few places.
