Description:

This is an example of a Victorian era Third Pattern Officer's cap of the 16th Queen's Lancers. The skull and peaks are black patent leather with gold bullion lace around the waist and edges of the peaks. The mortar board top is smooth melton fabric with ribbed sides and a gold bullion rosette with a "VR" cypher on the left side with a black feather plume with a ring. Gold bullion cord crosses the top and descends the angled corners. The rayed gilt plate has the Royal Arms of Great Britain with a Victorian crown above it in silver with 13 battle honors also in silver. There are large lion's head ear bosses supporting a heavy velvet backed chin chain. The front peak is lined in green skived leather. There is a natural skived leather sweat band and a red silk lining with a "CATE & Co." label inside.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, the exterior has very minor age texture with some tarnish on the gold lace. The gilt components show an overall bright appearance. The silver components have a dark aged patina. The leather and silk lining are excellent. This is an outstanding officer's lance cap.
