Description:

This pepperbox was manufactured between 1847-1854. The barrel assembly is stamped "ALLEN & THURBER WORCESTER" in one of the flutes, and the left side of the hammer is stamped "ALLENS PATENT/1845". The matching serial number is marked on the barrel cluster near the nipples, trigger guard, hammer, mainspring, grips, and front grip strap. The frame and nipple shield are engraved with a floral scroll pattern. It is fitted with bag shaped grips made of varnished walnut.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 85% plus of the original blue finish and nearly all of the hammer's brilliant case colors remain with gray and brown patina on the balance. The grips are very good with some small scrapes and pressure marks. The markings are legible but partially obscured. The action is fine, but very stiff.
