Description:

This Allen & Thurber pepperbox was produced in Worchester, Massachusetts between 1847 and 1865. The medium sized action and screwed on nipple shield display factory scroll engraving patterns. The hammer is marked "ALLEN'S PATENT" on the left, and the barrel group is marked with "PATENTED 1837 CAST STEEL" on one of the raised ribs and "ALLEN & THURBER WORCHESTER" on another. The bottom of the grip strap has been marked "JD14732" in period and is likely an inventory number. The barrel group is marked "37" and "4" near the nipples. The left side of the mainspring and grip strap are marked "37" as are the varnished walnut grip panels and the right side of the grip strap is marked "4".

Rating Definition:

Fine. 75% of the original finish present on the barrel group which the balance has mostly faded to a brown patina. The hammer retains 75% or more of the original case colors, and the action and nipple shield retain 25% of the original blue finish primarily on the shield and right side of the action. The grips are very good with nearly all of the glossy varnish and some small pressure marks and slight scrapes. The action is excellent and the markings are crisp.
