Description:

This large bore shotgun was produced by John Dickson & Son. The company was established in Edinburgh in 1820 and counted Lord Byron and other members of the British elite among their customers. It is marked "JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63; PRINCE STREET, EDINBURGH." on the rib and "JOHN DICKSON & SON" in banners on each of the back action lock plates. The serial number is marked on the lower tang. Aside from the brown finished Damascus barrels which display attractive twist patterns and have a single bead front sight, the metal surfaces feature intricate scroll engraving. The trigger guard and buttplate have a rich blue finish while the remaining components are color casehardened. It is mounted with a checkered European walnut forearm and straight wrist buttstock with an unmarked initial plate on the bottom. The shotgun comes in a hardwood takedown case with John Dickson & Son label on the fabric lined fitted interior. It includes a pair of replacement nipples and a variety of tools including a set of large leather bound powder flask and shot pouch, two wooden ramrods with brass tips, a cleaning kit, patch cutter, and more.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. This shotgun retains 98% plus of the blue and brown finish, fiery case colors, and distinct Damascus patterns. There is some light oxidation on the buttplate where the finish has flaked, some slight fading on the breech, and a few bright marks on the left barrel, but there are otherwise only some overall light handling marks. The initial shield has some dark patina. The stock is excellent with a couple minor pressure marks and light scrapes. The checkering is exceptionally crisp. The markings and engraving patterns are sharp throughout, and the action is excellent. The case is good with a crack in the lid and general light storage wear on the exterior and some light wear on the lining. The accessories are very good to excellent. This is an extraordinary John Dickson & Son double barrel shotgun that would be nearly impossible to improve upon!
