Description:

Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine converted to fire the .50-70 CF cartridge by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., circa post civil war. The carbine has a blued barrel with color casehardened barrel band, receiver, hammer, breechblock, lever and buttplate. The carbine has a bright sling bar and ring and oil-finished walnut stock and forearm. Screws and small components are niter blued. The barrel has a standard block-mounted nickel-silver front sight blade and R.S. Lawrence patent folding leaf rear sight. Sharps and Lawrence patent marks are located on the right side of the side plate and receiver and the two-line Sharps patent date is located on he left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel lacks the usual Sharps markings and there is no serial number on the upper tang. There is no indication that the barrel and tang were ever marked. The Ordnance inspection stamp applied to metallic cartridge conversions of Sharps Civil War carbines - the script initials "DFC" enclosed in a banner, is stamped near the center of the left side of the stock. A small "C" is stamped on the barrel, breechblock and firing pin. Metallic conversions of Civil War Sharps carbines were extensively issued to the U.S. cavalry prior to the introduction of the Trapdoor Springfield carbines c. 1875.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The carbine retains 95% of the arsenal blue and 60% casehardened finish. The barrel has several small patches of surface rust but is free from pitting, shows minimal handling wear and has a mirror bright bore. The receiver, hammer, breechblock, lever and buttplate have strong case colors. The pellet primer spring and receiver screws have most of the fire blue finish. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition; wear is limited to a few old and minor storage marks on the underside of the forearm. The Ordnance inspection stamp on the left side of the stock remains in near perfect condition. This is an excellent example of a an important Indian War cavalry carbine.
