Description:

This is an extraordinary example of a Peabody Breech Loading Carbine that was manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island, between 1866 and 1871. The .50 caliber carbine has a blue barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The walnut stock and forearm are oil finished. The barrel is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight and block-mounted font sight. A staple-mounted sling ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the legend "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." in five lines. The Peabody inspection mark for foreign contract arms which consists of the script letters "W.C." in a rectangle is stamped on the left stock wrist.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The carbine is all original and in mint condition. The barrel retains nearly 99% of the original blue finish. The vivid case colors on the barrel band, receiver, hammer, loading gate and buttplate are all intact and show virtually no handling wear. The screws are in perfect condition and retain all of the original blue finish. The five-line Peabody legend on the right side of the frame and the factory inspection mark on the left side of the stock wrist are crisp and completely legible. The stock and forearm remain in nearly new condition with only slight storage marks. This is a mint example of a scarce carbine that was purchased by France, Mexico, Spain and Canada following the American Civil War, it would be extremely difficult to ever upgrade this outstanding carbine.
