Description:

This New Model 1863 was manufactured near the end of the Civil War and then modified for metallic cartridges after the war. The same markings were on the conversion guns that were on the original percussion ones except for the additional "D.F.C." cartouche added to the center of the left side of the stock as a final inspection or acceptance mark for the conversions. This example has the standard markings. It is equipped with a pinned German silver blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight on a .52 caliber six groove rifled barrel, walnut straight grip stock and forearm with single barrel band and buttplate with cutout for a patch box door (not featured). Barrels with .5225 and under bores were not lined when the carbines and rifles were converted. It has a replacement saddle ring bar and ring.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished. The barrel retains 95% of the blue finish and case colors with some light scratches and areas of fading on the muzzle and receiver. The wood is also very fine with raised feathered grain, sharp cartouche and only a few small pressure marks. The action is excellent.
