Description:

Just over 20,000 Second Model Maynard carbines were produced in 1863 and 1865. They were issued to Union cavalry regiments and most saw rough service in the later years of the war. The left side of the frame is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6 1859", and "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" is on the right side. The serial number appears on the lower tang. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight and a three leaf rear sight. The left side of the rear sight base is marked with the letter "N", and the left side barrel flat is marked with the letter "S". The letter "S" is also on the saddle ring base mounted on the left side of the frame. The carbine is fitted with a smooth oil finished walnut straight grip stock with two sharp boxed cartouches on the left wrist. The stock is correctly without a patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel displays 90% of the original blue finish with some thinning and a patch of mild pitting. The action retains 50% dark case colors with some light spotting. The buttplate has a brown patina. The stock is very fine with some small dings and light scratches. The markings including the stock cartouches are crisp, and the action is excellent.
