Description:

Regulation pattern Model 1850 Staff and Field Officers Sword with a 32 inch double fuller blade etched with a combination of scrollwork, martial themes and "US" up two-thirds of the blade, including an etched Ames address on the ricasso. The three branch hilt is gilt brass construction, with cast floral motifs and "US" on the guard and a rayskin grip. With a blued steel scabbard fitted with gilt brass hardware and marked with the Ames address on the rear of the suspension band.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blade retains about half of the original bright polish finish, with brown spotting over the remainder. Over 70% of the gilt finish is present on the hilt, with a dark antique patina on the guard and a more maroon tone on the pommel. The grip is missing all but one turn of the twisted wire wrap and the rayskin cover is open at the seam. 60% of the blue is present on the scabbard, with spotting on the remainder, dents at the throat, and aging similar to the pommel on the fittings. A desirable Civil War Ames, regulation pattern Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword in un-touched attic condition.
