Description:

Manhattan Navy revolver manufactured c. 1864. The revolver has the Series IV features which include: (1) two line barrel legend with "MARCH 8, 1864" patent date, (2) "1859" patent date on the cylinder and (3) recoil shield mounted spring plate. The left side of the barrel lug is stamped: "KITTREDGE/CIN O." in two lines. B. Kittredge was the well-known Cincinnati, Ohio, firearms retailer who became an agent for Manhattan Firearms in 1861. Kittredge-marked guns are a scarce and desirable Manhattan revolver variation. The five-shot cylinder has nine stops and is roll-stamped with five detailed military scenes in oval panels. The full serial number "49101" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9101" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder and on the right side of the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel and cylinder. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish "piano" finish. Many Federal officers purchased the well made Manhattan Navy revolvers as personal sidearms during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver is all original, shows minimal firing wear and retains at least 95% of the blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the high polish blue finish with a few minor handling marks and three small areas of light pitting near the muzzle. The cylinder retains 100% of the delicate military scenes and more than 90% of the blue finish. The finish is thin over one chamber and there are traces of flash pitting on the percussion nipples. Small amounts of the delicate silver plated finish are present on protected areas of the trigger guard and grip strap. None of the silver-plating remains on the back strap. The exposed brass has a very attractive age patina. The walnut grip is in excellent condition and retains more than 95% of the piano varnish finish; wear is limited to scattered and very minor handling marks. The Kittredge markings, barrel legend, cylinder markings and serial numbers are crisp. The action functions perfectly. This is an exceptional example of a Manhattan Series IV Navy revolver with scarce and desirable Kittredge markings.
