This is an example of one of 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn breechloading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department from the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight and a folding two-leaf rear sight. The lock plate is marked: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON CONN/1864" ahead of the hammer. The rear of the breechblock is marked with the three line 1861 and 1862 patent dates, and the mismatched serial numbers are located on the top of the breechblock and on the upper tang. It is mounted with a straight grip walnut stock with a "US" marked buttplate. There are some small stamps on the stock including an anchor at the front of the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The carbine retains 75% of the original blue on the barrel and strong traces of case colors under a brown patina on the breech and lock. There are some light scratches and minor marks overall along with patches of pitting on the barrel. The stock is fine with a long hairline crack present at the toe with various minor pressure marks and light abrasions. The action is excellent, and the primary markings are crisp.
