Description:

This unique Third Model musket variant of the Winchester Model 1873 was manufactured in 1884 and has golden vine designs on most of the components. The sides of the hammer and bottom of the cartridge elevator have some matching engraving designs and the stock and musket style forearm have coordinating carved designs. It has the integral dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges and is equipped with a blade front sight on a raised stud, three barrel bands, bayonet stud on the front band, sling swivel on the middle band and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to "8." The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent information ahead of the rear sight and "44 CAL" is stamped at the breech and on the cartridge elevator. The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang is marked with the serial number. A second sling swivel is mounted to the bottom of the butt and the buttplate has a trapdoor.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period master custom embellished. The musket has a mostly even brown overall along with 90% of the gold inlay with areas of light to mild pitting and some light scratches. The wood is good with partially smoothed relief carved designs, some minor scrapes and nicks and a glossy varnish. Some of the markings are obscured. The action remains fine.
