Manufactured in 1896, the second year of production, this rifle is 1 of the only 5,000 flat side receiver models manufactured by Winchester. Built on a John Browning patent, the Model 1895 was the first box magazine rifle manufactured by Winchester. This solid frame rifle is equipped with a dovetailed brass blade front and adjustable rear buck horn sporting rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "38-72 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895", and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Directly behind the trigger is marked "PAT NOV. 5, 1895/- NOV. 12, 1895-". Blue finish with casehardened hammer and lever and mounted with a tapered walnut forearm with an ebony forend insert and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Very fine. The rifle retains 70% original blue finish with some overall very light spotting, some edge wear and a few minor scratches on the receiver. The hammer and receiver have a smooth brown patina. The wood is also very fine with at least 95% original varnish remaining, showing some scattered minor dents and dings and a non-factory swivel hole in the belly of the buttstock. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
