Description:

Manufactured in 1878, this is an early second pattern/model rifle with the dust cover guide rail attached to the top of the receiver by two screws and a checkered thumb piece on the cover. It also features German silver blade front and buckhorn sporting rear sights, full length magazine tube, and a smooth straight grip walnut stock and forearm with crescent buttplate. The barrel is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." (faint) ahead of the rear sight with no visible caliber markings on the barrel or elevator. The upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1876." and the serial number is marked on the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle primarily displays a light gray-brown patina with traces of the original finish, some light scratches, some patches of minor oxidation and light pitting, and an attractive aged patina on the elevator. The refinished and repaired wood is fine with some scattered dings, scratches, and minor chips. Mechanically fine with some markings faded as noted above.
