Description:

Imported U.S. officer's saber manufactured circa 1830. The saber has a 29 1/2 inch curved blade with un-stopped fuller. The blade has 14 inch niter blue panels on either side engraved with gold washed stands of arms and colors and small floral designs. The maker's initials "S&K" are etched on the ricasso in a gold washed panel. The silver-plated brass hilt features a cast eagle head pommel, stirrup-shaped knuckle bow and ribbed bone grip wrapped with twisted brass wire. The obverse languet is cast with a spread eagle and shield design and the languet on the opposite side of the guard is plain. The down-turned quillon terminates in a detailed eagle's head. The saber has a silver-plated brass scabbard decorated with open floral engraving above and below the suspension bands and extending upward from the drag for approximately 10 inches. The suspension bands are decorated with cast floral designs.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blade retains most of the original polish with several minor patches of age discoloration. There are several shallow nicks in the edge of the blade. The blue panel retains 50% of the nitre blue finish and most of the gold wash. The brass hilt retains traces of the original silver plating in protected areas. The casting on the eagle head pommel, languet and quillon is crisp. The grip has darkened with age and has a number of old repairs along the top and back of the grips. The scabbard has more wear than the saber and retains about 40% of the silver-plated finish. The scabbard has a number of light dents along the forward edge and several shallow dents on the right side. This is a very good example of a good quality U.S. Army officer's saber.
