Description:

This sword is similar to the "Militia Artillery officer's sword, 1820-1835" pictured and discussed on page 113 of THE AMERICAN SWORD, 1775-1945 and has features of the swords produced under the regulations of 1821. The fullered straight blade measures 31 1/4 inches and has niter blue panels on the lower 16 1/2 inches of the length on each side with gold and silver floral designs along with "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" in a banner over the Federal Eagle motif on the right side and a martial motif on the left. The hilt is gilded brass with floral and feather design knuckle guard, ribbed bone grip and an eagle head pommel. It included a gilded brass scabbard with engraved floral and Federal eagle motifs, two hanger rings and a frog stud.

Rating Definition:

Good. The blade retains more than 75% of the niter blue and about 75% of the gilding. The bright points have scattered oxidation/pitting. The guard and pommel retain traces of the gilding with an aged patina overall. The grip is very good with a slightly darkened cream tone from aging, a couple small chips and traces of white in the grooves and a slight gap between it and the pommel tang. The tip of the quillion is absent. The scabbard is good with several significant dents and has an aged patina.
