Description:

This blanket gun was made by cutting down the barrel an unknown half-stock fowling piece. It has no sights, a part octagon barrel, light engraving on the upper tang and lock plate which has some obscured markings, and a straight wrist walnut stock with brass buttplate and trigger guard with acorn finial. The included letter from the late Colonel L. Doug Allard of the Flathead Indian Museum states: "This letter is to accompany the "Blanket Gun" which is item #281 in our March 1994 auction catalog. This gun was purchased by a donor to a museum in 1935 at Crow Agency Montana from "Bird in Ground", a Crow Indian who said it was carried by his father at the Custer battle. I saw documentation of this when I got the gun to deassession and believe it to be true."

Rating Definition:

Poor. The cut down barrel and loose lock plate have mild pitting and gray and brown patina. The brass furniture has an aged patina. The stock is poor with scrapes, several cracks (some repaired), and material absent at the breech. The action is not functional. Overall a interesting relic which may have been used against Custer's men at the Battle of Little Big Horn. We have no way to either prove or disprove the aforementioned history!
