Description:

The so called Model 1795 was not a specific model and had an array of variations. This particular example has a 42 inch barrel which may have been cut down in the period from 44 inches but otherwise has many attributes of the Type I including the undated lock plate, curled toe on the frizzen, detachable iron flash pan, cock shape, long pointed finials on the trigger guard, fluted comb on the stock, bayonet lug 1 1/4 inch from the muzzle, and sling swivels without screws. It has the "eagle (facing right)/US (script)" mark in front of the hammer and "SPRINGFIELD" in a horizontal crescent at the tail of the lock plate which has a spurred end. The P and eagle head markings on the left side of the barrel are mostly worn away, but the "V" as well as a "5" and "Z" are visible. Additional "5" marks are found on several other components. It features iron mountings finished bright including a sling swivel mounted on lug ahead of the trigger guard, and two piece trigger plate and mounted with a full stock with a sharp comb secured with three barrel bands and no ram rod. The iron buttplate is dated "1803" on the top. The bayonet is marked "U.S." at the base of the 18 inch blade and is 21 inches in total length.

Rating Definition:

About good. The possibly shortened or replaced barrel has mostly brown patina and extensive moderate surface pitting overall. Most of the bright finished mountings are bright with some marks and some oxidation. The lock has some brown patina with some pitting. The buttplate has surface pitting and oxidation, but the 1803 is clear. The bayonet is bright with some gray patina forming and some dark spot. The wood is fine with sharp edges around the lock plate, various minor scratches, dings, and marks. Mechanically fine with ramrod absent.
