Description:

Only 15,340 of these .44-40 WCF Smith & Wesson revolvers were manufactured from 1886 to 1913 (all frames manufactured prior to 1899) compared to 53,590 manufactured in .44 S&W Russian. The Frontier Double Action was built on a round butt, top break Model 3 frame that automatically ejects the cases upon opening. It has the pre-1900 two line address/patent dates marked on top of the rib, no caliber marking on the barrel, pinned round blade front and notch rear sights, a 1 9/16 inch cylinder, blue finish with casehardened trigger and hammer, and checkered hard rubber grips with S&W monograms at the tops. All serial numbers are matching.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 30% plus of the original blue finish and40% of the original case colors with a gray-brown patina on the balance, high edge wear, a brighter cylinder drag line, and some light pitting. The moderately worn grips are good with some smoothing of the checkering and aged "chocolate" coloration. Mechanically excellent with crisp markings.
