Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1889. The rifle has the Model 1884 Buffington rear sight marked "R" on the top of the leaf, late production two piece trigger guard, grooved trigger, three click tumbler, impressed checkering on the hammer spur and low arch breech block. The rifle has a military blue finish with vivid, water quenched, case colors on the breech block and barrel tang. The black walnut stock is oil finished. The lock plate is roll stamped with Springfield Eagle/Shield motif ahead of the hammer followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. The top of the breech block is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884" in three lines. The top of the barrel is stamped with a block "A" between the rear sight and the receiver. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks. The serial number, "454538" is stamped across the rear of the receiver. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate ahead of the screw. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "SWP" above the date "1889" within a rectangle with flattened corners. The encircled script "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard finial. The Model 1884 Trapdoor Springfield was an important U.S. Army rifle that was used in the final engagements of the Indian Wars and carried in the Spanish American War by U.S. Volunteer regiments. A Trapdoor Springfield rifle is a key piece in any collection of U.S. martial arms.

Excellent. The rifle is all original, shows only storage wear and retains 97% plus of the blue and casehardened finish. Finish wear is limited to some scuff marks on the buttplate heel. The breech block has strong case colors. All of the markings on the barrel, breech block, receiver and buttplate are crisp. The bore is mirror bright. The stock is in excellent condition with some scattered, light storage marks. The Ordnance inspection mark on the left wrist is extremely sharp. This is an excellent example of a Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that would be a great addition to any U.S. martial arms collection.
