Description:

This rolling block rifle was manufactured by the Springfield Armory under a royalty agreement with Remington Arms Company. Approximately 10,000 were produced in 1871 and 1872. It has a bright finish barrel with a blade front sight on a bayonet stud base and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to "9". It is mounted with oil finished walnut stock and military style forearm with two "U" marked barrel bands and a crescent "U.S." marked buttplate. An "ESA" cartouche is on the left side of the wrist. The right side of the casehardened frame is marked with the Federal eagle motif over "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872", and "MODEL 1871" is on the left side. The upper tang has the two-line Remington patent information.

Rating Definition:

Very good as cleaned. The case colors have mostly silvered out on the action giving the rifle a slightly muted but overall bright appearance with some faint pitting/spotting on the re-polished barrel and some light scratches. The varnished wood is very good and has some chips, scrapes, mild wear on the rear of the forearm, and a few scattered pressure marks and scratches on the remainder. The action is excellent, and the markings are crisp.
