Description:

This Springfield Trapdoor carbine falls in the Model 1879 serial range. It features a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1500 yards with a "C" marked base numbered 1 through 8, a pinned blade front sight, and a saddle ring mounted to the left side of the stock. The casehardened low arch breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873". The barrel has the "V/P/eagle head/P" proof marks on the left side. It has the correct carbine stock with single barrel band, "US" marked buttplate with compartment, and a boxed "SWP/1881" cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The serial number is followed with the five-pointed star suffix indicating arsenal rework/refinishing.

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal refurbished. The arsenal blue finish is 60% intact and has mostly faded to a brown patina throughout with some patches of minor pitting and some light spotting along with some small nicks and scratches. Strong case colors remain on the barrel tang along with more faded case colors on the other parts of the breech. The re-oiled stock is very good with a crisp cartouche (the border has been recut) and only a few dings and light scrapes. Mechanically excellent with mostly clear markings.
