This Colt Model 1877 DA revolver was manufactured in 1885. This revolver was formerly part of the famous Robert Q. Sutherland collection and is illustrated and described on page 324 of "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" by R. L. Wilson. The revolver has a nickel-plated finish with niter blue screws and two-piece pearl bird's head grips. The revolver features flawlessly executed Germanic scroll engraving on a punch-dot background with zig-zag, double line and dot borders. The engraving style is very similar to the factory work but cannot be identified as factory engraving. The engraving coverage is at least equivalent to Colt "B" engraving. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Hartford address surrounded by a delicate double line dot, border. The Colt "three-date/three-line" patent markings and the encircled Rampant Colt trademark are roll-stamped on the left side of the frame. "38 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number, "51473" is stamped on the bottom of the frame and back strap. The rear face of the cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "4 73" between the chambers and "73" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The action functions perfectly. The revolver is accompanied by a completed Model 1877 Survey from the late author, Don Wilkerson.

Very fine as professionally restored. The revolver retains 98% of the nickel-plated finish with minimal handling wear. The flawlessly executed, highly detailed, scroll engraving is in perfect condition. The frame screws have nearly all of the niter blue finish. The frame and barrel markings are sharp. There is a gap between the right grip and the frame and some very small chips along the back of both grips but the grips are in very fine overall condition. This is an exceptional, engraved, Colt Model 1877 DA revolver from one of the most comprehensive collections of Colt firearms ever assembled.
