This is an extraordinary example of a near new Colt Model 1878 Double Action Frontier Six Shooter revolver that was manufactured in 1897. The revolver has a nickel-plated finish with fire blue hammer top, trigger and screws. The distinctive bird's head grip has two-piece black checkered hard rubber grips embossed with the Rampant Colt trademark in an oval. A casehardened lanyard swivel is mounted on the butt. The hammer has elongated bordered knurling on the spur. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" in one line. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "COLT'S P.T. F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-". The underside of the barrel is stamped with the caliber designation "44" just ahead of the frame. The encircled Rampant Colt trademark is roll-stamped on the lower left side of the frame just ahead of the grip. The full serial number "37779" is stamped on the butt and the partial serial number "779" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder and penciled on the inside of both grips. The assembly number "233" is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grip and on the back of the loading gate. All of the visible serial numbers and assembly numbers match. The Model 1878 was the first Colt heavy frame double action revolver. A total of 51,210 Colt Model 1878 Double Action revolvers were manufactured between 1878 and 1905.

Excellent plus, near new. The revolver is all original and retains at least 99% plus of the bright original nickel plated finish. There are some small spots of flaking on the sides of the frame and the face and front of the cylinder. The hammer, trigger and screws retain nearly all of the fire blue finish. Most of the case colors are present on the cylinder pin and lanyard swivel. The hard rubber grips are in excellent condition with minimal wear. The serial numbers, barrel and frame markings are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly.
