Description:

Measuring 9 1/2 inches wide and 13 1/2 inches tall, the frame is constructed from 92.5 percent pure silver, with a set of "FH/W" (Franz and Hermann Wandinger, Munich) hallmarks on the top, a leather back with a hinged door, a stepped-down profile on the front edges, and a 1 3/4 inch tall Greek key bordered panel on the bottom front bearing a raised Nazi Eagle flanked by the initials "A H". Though no documentation is available, similar "A H" flanked eagles are found on a variety of items attributed to Hitler, and many of those were found with the Wandinger's hallmark, suggesting that this frame could have been part of the interior furniture of one of Hitler's residences or headquarters. Inside the picture frame is a portrait of Hitler in his party uniform, printed 8 3/4 inches tall and 6 5/8 inches wide on 11 by 8 1/8 inch stock, with the "A. Hitler" signature on the bottom. The signature appears to have been inked as opposed to printed, and shows proper variation in line thickness, but we can not confirm if this is legitimately hand-signed or an auto-pen copy. A thin brown cardboard strip is affixed to the back edge of the bottom, likely for stability, and no printers markings are present. Much like the frame, the path this portrait took through history is unknown, as are the circumstances behind their combination. It would be safe to assume that Hitler didn't have a signed photograph of himself sitting on his desk in the Reichs Chancellery, but beyond that details are limited. Also included with the lot is a maroon leatherette case deeply embossed with the Party Eagle on the front and fitted for the frame.

Rating Definition:

The frame is very fine, with a few handling marks and a mixed aged patina. The portrait is good as partially restored. Two small sections of the surface on the left side were pulled off, with one of them intruding into the portrait just above Hitler's shoulder, disrupting the background but not the arm or sleeve. A black paint touch-up was applied to a 3 inch wedge on and around the damage, bleeding slightly onto the white portion of the stock. The case is very good, with some repairs/touch-ups on the rear and on the hinges, scuffing concentrated on the edges, and mild wear on the interior. Both the frame and the portrait are valuable Third Reich relics, which would be difficult to find in any condition.
