Description:

This model was manufactured between 1861 and 1874 and was very successful commercially. Many of these were used as personal side arms by Civil War soldiers. A pair were owned by General Custer, and Wild Bill Hickok had one the night he was shot. The top of the barrel rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." The serial number is marked on the butt. It is equipped with a German silver fixed blade front sight, integral notch rear sight, and a smooth, six shot cylinder marked with the patent dates around the center. The frame has a spur trigger, three-pin top strap, and is fitted with smooth two-piece grips. It comes in a fitted mahogany case with two loose .32 long rimfire cartridges, an unopened box of fifty Remington-UMC .32 short rimfire cartridges, an oiler, cleaning rod, and patches.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The pistol retains 70% plus of the original blue finish with a brown patina on the balance, some small patches of oxidation/pitting, and some small nicks and scratches overall. The cylinder has a clear drag line. The grips are fine with a chip missing, age cracks on the bottom, and a nice mix of creamy and golden tones. The action remains excellent, and the markings are clear. The case is fine with some minor stains and wear on the interior, some hairline cracks around the initial shield, and minor storage type wear on the exterior.
