Description:

This is a beautiful example of a WWI Imperial German Model 1914 Artillery Luger that has been beautifully engraved (non-factory) in a meticulous finely detailed English scroll engraving. The Luger itself was probably an excellent pistol to start with that had matching numbers and was meticulously hand polished (to keep the flats and edges square). It was then masterfully engraved with over 50% engraving coverage. The pattern as noted is a fine English scroll engraving that covers the sides of the frame and barrel extension, down the grip straps and the rear half of the barrel. The chamber area is dated 1917, and it still retains the original "DWM" markings. The various Imperial German acceptance proofs and firing proofs are still visible on the right side of the barrel extension and underside of the barrel along with all the serial numbers on the various parts overall; all of the numbers are matching except the grips and magazine. It is fitted with the distinctive 8-inch artillery barrel with tangent rear sight and inverted "v" front sight. The rear sight has the fine tune adjustment screw. It has the standard military serial number placement on all the parts with the font of the frame, underside of the barrel and left side of the barrel extension having the full serial number with the last two digits of the serial number (72) marked on the small components. Interestingly, the safety is marked "FEUER" (Fire) in addition to the standard "Gesichert" (safe) marking, and the extractor is marked "GELADEN". It is fitted with a set of post WWI beech type wood grips that has an Imperial Eagle inset on the left grip. The pistol was blued with a matte type blued finish, and the smaller parts are polished and straw colored. It is fitted with a WWI type unnumbered or proofed wooden base magazine. This highly embellished Artillery Luger pistol was photographed and pictured in "Lugers at Random" on page 366 back in the late 1960s.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as custom embellished with 99% of its custom blued finish overall. The various small parts retain 98% of their light straw colors overall. The grips are also in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides, showing only some minor handling marks on the right side. A very nice looking, exceptionally well engraved WWI German Imperial Luger pistol.
