The Merrimack Arm & Manufacturing Company manufactured the Southerner pistols from 1866 to 1873. This example features rare factory geometric and scroll engraving on the barrel and frame and is fitted with a pair of smooth grips. It is marked "SOUTHERNER" on the top flat and "MERRIMACK ARMS & M'F'G Co./NEWBURYPORT, MASS./PATENTED APRIL 9, 1867" on the left flat of the barrel. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the butt and barrel (partial). It has a round blade front sight that aligns with the hammer.

Very good as custom embellished. The barrel retains 50% of the gold finish while the frame retains 75% plus of the replated silver. The hammer and right side of the frame have some deep pitting and there are some minor nicks and light scratches overall. The grips are very good with some small age cracks and attractive cream tones. The action is excellent, and the markings and engraving remain crisp.
