Description:

This rifle is pictured and discussed in GEORGE SHREYER, SR & JR: GUNMAKERS OF HANOVER, YORK COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA by George Shumway on pages 94 and 95. It has been described as follows: ". . .According to a recent owner, it was acquired by an earlier owner in the 1930's from an Indian reservation in up-state New York. In the years before that it doubtless was carried hundreds and hundreds of miles by horseback, for the lower part of the fore-stock is worn completely through to the ramrod channel. . .The finial on the patch box has a large four-petal flower engraved upon it, but near the hinge rather than at the end. . . The short spacing between the first and second ramrod pipes suggests that the barrel has been shortened by an inch or two. The barrel is signed in script 'G. Schreyer.'" The smoothbore barrel is equipped with blade front and notch rear sights. The stock has all brass furniture including an 8 point star on the cheek piece, features floral carving on the wrist and left side of the butt and is held by a series of brass wedges and small pins. A wooden ramrod is included.

Rating Definition:

About good as period converted to percussion. The gun shows signs of many years of hard use as noted in the excerpt above. The barrel and lock display a dark brown patina with pitting and oxidation while the brass components display primarily a dark aged patina with bright verdigris on the interior of the patch box and a brighter aged patina on the wedges. The stock is also fair with a section worn through to the ramrod channel between the trigger guard finial and the ramrod entry pipe, material absent near the lock and on the heel, some cracks, evidence of sanding, some small pieces of furniture absent, and a portion of the patch box unpinned. The action needs some work. The barrel marking is partially faded but decipherable while the designs on the patch box and cheek piece are clear. This well worn smoothbore is a great example of the blend of utility and art that made up some of North America's early iconic firearms.
